"Should Couples Live Together Before Marriage?"


Today, many couples live together before marriage. Not only Americans, but also many Japanese couples lives together. The numbers are increasing and many elderly generation people have decided to live together before they get married too. Couples love each other deeply and want to be with girlfriends or boyfriends as much as possible. That’s why they decide to live together. However, cohabitation is very difficult because it has many good and bad points. The climate of public opinion change quickly after World War2. At present, it is a good idea that couples live together before they get married.

People who have the contrary opinion of this say that “living together before marriage is not a good idea.” A general trend toward living together makes people keep away from marriage because singles do not really have to take responsibility for a girlfriend or boyfriend. To become a family is really difficult and they must take all the responsibility of a family. Many people are scared about this and do not really want to take joint liability even if they love each other. To live together before marriage makes people stay single.

The old Japanese thought was: A woman who has married yet has to be a virgin. They say cohabitation is impure because the most cases they loose their vestal. Some people say living together before marriage makes less family communication. Recently, young people do not stay home at night or on the weekend because they love to hang out with friends all the time. In other words, before marriage is good chance to make lots of communication with their family too. However, it is clear that cohabitation takes people away from their family and makes less communication with them.

On the other hand, there are many good points of living together before marriage. For example, it is a good chance for a couple to get to know each other well. All people have not only good points but also weak or poor point too. They really don’t want to show these weak points a front of people. As said before, marriage is difficult and one of the biggest decision in people’s lifes. To become wife and husband means they have to accept all about partner, including weak points or some other negative side. They have to share not only happy things, but sadness too. Through cohabitation, people will see their partner’s weak points and it makes time for couples to think if they really want to get married or not.

In addition, a lot of woman who get married, are working. Many years ago, people thought housekeeping was for wife, as a matter of course. However, most couples now share housekeeping: for example, cooking and cleaning. Cohabitation helps their future when they get married. To share partnership with somebody makes them stick together a lot. It is said that common hardships knot a family together. Couples will know how their parents work hard to keep their family and they will thank their parents. To live together also makes many influences for their future and also makes their marriage life goes smoothly.

From these reasons, it is a good idea to live together before getting married. Cohabitation makes people more responsible about themselves and partners too. Also it is a good chance to think about marriage and thank their parents because people will notice how much their parents have worked for their children when they live away from their family.
